Remothered (stylized as REMOTHERED), also known as Remothered 2D, was to be a classically styled 2D survival horror game built on the RPG Maker XP engine. As of 2012, this version is no longer in production.

It was the spiritual predecessor of Remothered: Tormented Fathers and Remothered: Broken Porcelain.

Development history

The project dates back to 2007, when it began as a fan-remake/reimagining of Hifumi Kono's 1995 Super Nintendo classic Clock Tower. Prior to that, Chris Darril was working on a different horror game, similarly inspired by Clock Tower, titled Blood Repentance. The game, originally titled Clock Tower: Remothered, then simply REMOTHERED (meaning "rebirth"), was being made in RPG Maker XP engine, using Adobe Photoshop to draw 2D assets somewhat mirroring the aesthetics of a classic oil painting.

From 2009 to 2012, the project would undergo through re-writes and graphical adjustments, introducing new characters and new story elements, as the game evolved to become more of a personal tribute to Clock Tower and the classic survival horror era [1] than a faithful remake. During this time, sequels were also announced that would take place before and after the events of the first game, making Remothered a trilogy and expanding upon its universe and lore. The prequel, titled Remothered: Grave Torments, would have followed a new protagonist named Katherine Gale who travels to a small town in Bosnia after inheriting her father's library. The sequel would have been inspired by the story of Clock Tower 2, but very few details about it were ever released to the public, as Darril wanted to focus on the development of the first game.

By 2013 the project had grown to become a separate IP from Clock Tower and gained a professional publisher. The rebooted version of Remothered was planned to be developed in a 3D engine, but due to creative differences between the parties involved the project was eventually put on a hiatus. Chris Darril went to work on other projects such as Forgotten Memories: Alternate Realities and on NightCry with Hifumi Kono, the creator of the original Clock Tower. During this time, Darril refused several offers to purchase the Remothered IP, opting to keep full creative control of the franchises.

In late 2016, the project resurfaced under the new title Remothered: Tormented Fathers featuring the revamped story and characters based on the original game and aspects of Remothered: Grave Torments[2].

Sister Anne, the main protagonist

Blood Repentance (ita. "Il Pentimento di Sangue") was Chris Darril's early game inspired by the original Clock Tower and giallo movies. The project preceded Remothered but some of its ideas, such as the main character being a nun and the Baroni family, made it into the later versions of Remothered.

Seven endings were planned for the final release. Darril shared the pictures of the updated version of the game, which was ultimately cancelled as the creator moved on to Remothered[3]. The demo version of the game can be found online.[4]

Story

Sister Anne Green is a young nun who one day travels to the mansion of the DeBaroni family at the request of her Mother Superior. Caught by a sudden rain, she is forced to spend the night at the mansion, where she is stalked by an entity known Hjeker. She learns of the family's tragic secrets about how the DeBaronis' child Nicholai fell victim to a terminal illness, which led to him becoming possessed and the rest of the family, including the head of the household Harrison and his mother, being driven into madness. Anne witnesses Mrs DeBaroni's horrific murder by her husband and barely escapes with her life, assisted by the ghosts of the previous victims.

Remothered 2007 teaser

Teaser for the 2007 version

The first ever version shown to the public was said to be inspired by Clock Tower: The First Fear's story, instead of being a direct remake. One noticeable difference was a rather mature looking Jennifer (mistaken for an adult woman, although actually stated be a teenager[5]), who was said to be accompanied by her sisters as she was visiting an old family manor. The game would have tackled religious topics, similarly to the later versions of Remothered, and the girl would have faced demonic enemies. Jennifer was later redesigned to closer resemble her Clock Tower counterpart and the game's assets were incorporated into the later version.

The game was to be developed by Mansyon Soft[6]. A handful of images were released for this version and the only known footage is believed to be lost. The graphic assets for this version were briefly available for download. [7]

Version 2 (2009)

Early stages of Remothered version 2

Development

This version included a more in-depth story and new environments, such as a forested area surrounding the manor, more stalkers and a flashforward sequence featuring a reporter that would change depending on the ending recieved.

Most notable change was the introduction of new characters, such as old house keeper named Madame Svenska and a mute gardener Richard Felton. Jennifer's friends were given last names and more fleshed out personalities and they could join Jennifer in exploring the mansion, depending on the player's choices. Jennifer and Lotte were implied to be in a romantic relationship, similarly to Celeste and Lindsay in Broken Porcelain. Since Remothered was to be published commercially, some characters' names were changed later in development to avoid any copyright-related issues. Most notably, Jennifer's last name was changed to Sutton[8] and the Barrows family became the Baroni. Jennifer also became a blonde, inspired by the heroines of Rule of Rose and Haunting Ground.

Remothered with more detailed surroundings and updated sprites, mirrors' and moths' first appearance.

The gameplay was meant to feature real time stalkers and controls similar to Clock Tower 3 and Haunting Ground, instead of a point-and-click system and scripted events. Additional gameplay mechanics would have included the spellbook Animorum[9] and the "REM Phase", a "mind palace"-like feature that could be used to solve puzzles and make deductions based on the items found and the events occurred that would affect the ending. In addition to the stalkers, the secondary enemies called the Homunculi were introduced, resembling small porcelain dolls which could attach themselves to the player and alert the nearest stalker to their presence.

This version was developed by Darril Asylum and officially entered the production in 2009, aiming to be released in 2010. It was eventually delayed to late 2011[10]before being quietly cancelled with all the official footage taken off the internet. Only the original soundtrack was officially released. Darril cited numerous gamebreaking bugs that prevented the game from being completed, later claiming the build had been completely lost due to a computer crash. He shared a few pictures from a version of the game he managed to recover in 2021, but stated he had no interest in completing it. [11]

The game was meant to be followed by Grave Torments (the prequel) and Remothered II.[12]

Plot

I'm curious

The game's opening sequence features Dakota Wrang reporting on a massacre occurred at the mansion in the countryside of Romsdalen, owned by the Baroni family, and the bodies of children found brutally mutilated.

Jennifer along with her friends were orphans living at the Flemmington Girls Institute until they were suddenly adopted by a rich landowner named Steven Baroni. The girls would be taken to their home by their teacher Ms. Mary Rose Reed, an alleged employee of Mr. Baroni, who was responsible for taking them to the mansion.

Arriving into their new home, Jennifer begins to see paranormal activities, like seeing a ghostly figure in a mirror and in her bedroom window. At the dinner table, Lotte asks where their new adoptive father is and Mary responds that he is away at some important meeting. Mary then expresses her concerns about Jennifer, who opens up about what she had seen earlier, but Anne doesn't believe her and calls her crazy. Mary takes Jennifer to the bathroom to speak with her privately and tells the girl to take her medicine.

Some time later, when Jennifer and Lotte are in their room getting ready for bed, Laura walks in angrily telling Lotte to turn down the TV and leaves. When Jennifer begins to hear a metallic noise outside of the bedroom, Lotte shrugs it off saying that "they have turned on their TV" (players can make a decision whether to a take a look or not). If Jennifer decides to take a look, Lotte agrees to go with her.

While out looking for the source of the sound, Jennifer heads into the bathroom and finds Laura hung by her hands in the shower, mutilated from the neck down. Jennifer is in terrible shock and when she sees a figure poking out its head of the bloodied water, who jumps out and pursues her with a giant pair of scissors.

The game was meant to feature 13 endings and an epilogue.[13]

Remothered: Grave Torments (2010-2011)

Grave torments

Story

The story would have taken place before and after the first Remothered.[12][19]

In 1970s, Katherine Gale is a violin student who, during her senior year, moves to Nawarro Windmill, in Bosnia, to gather information for her final thesis and to investigate her inheritance, a library left to her by her late father before his death. A mysterious illness hits her while driving, but she eventually arrives at the town of Nawarro Windmill. As her illness worsens, she remembers a moment of her childhood, where she was rushed to a hospital. When her father, Norman Gale, was alive, he wrote a will stating that the library in the city of Nawarro Windmill had to be left to Katherine after his death. This would have been revealed by the notary, Ms. Bouward.

Grave Torments was meant to feature fully 3D graphics and environments, but there are no screenshots or footage in existance.

Version 3 (2012-2013)

Ss14

Only known screenshot of the final version of Remothered 2D. Jennifer Sutton's new design and more detailed environment.

Development

The third version is considered a reboot with a completely revamped story and characters. An early build based on the 2009's RPG Maker XP prototype existed, but the final game was intended to be developed in 3D engine for PC and Wii U. The game was set to be published by Artematica[20].

The game was going to have 3 playable characters; Jennifer Sutton, Lindsay Silverhat and Rosemary Reed (no relation to Rosemary Reed from Tormented Fathers).

Robert Baroni was now portrayed as a figure of a grown man, rather than a small child, wearing a porcelain doll mask (which would have been revealed to be his real face as a result of a demonic possession). His signature scissors were now fused directly into his right arm.

Several concept arts showing the updated character designs and settings were released, but no gameplay footage was ever shown.

Music

Remothered (Original Soundtrack) was released digitally on December 2nd, 2011 by Darril Asylum. The soundtrack for all three versions was directed by Chris Darril and composed by Mattia Gosetti, David Gonzalez, and Dan Beyer, except for the very last track, which was a song by Ueickap that was meant to be played during the game's credits.

In the preview version of the soundtrack released in 2010, there was a track named "Let's Play, Jennifer"[24], a remake of "Don't Cry, Jennifer" theme from Clock Tower: The First Fear. The track did not make it into the final version due to copyright reasons.
